Best places in the Hamptons:

Ice cream. Bay Burger, 1742 Sag Harbor Turnpike, Sag Harbor, 631-899-3915. Skip the burgers and go straight to dessert. The local media makes a big deal out of the co-owner’s hamburger pedigree. (He was a cook at The Burger Joint in the Parker Meridian Hotel, widely reputed to have the best burgers in New York City and often visited by celebrity residents such as Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick.) Although the burgers at Bay Burger are made with high-quality meat, we found them overcooked and under-seasoned. The real standout here is the homemade ice cream. You can buy it from the takeout window facing the sea of asphalt parking lot. Don’t be put off by the exterior of this place. Inside is a nice minimalist combination of wainscoting and stainless steel and there’s a nice outdoor seating area in the back. Not a gourmet burger destination, but definitely a good place to have dinner if you have little kids. Families realized this from the moment the place opened its doors this summer. That’s why you’ll often see a veritable parade of toddlers and preschoolers holding their parents’ hands and skipping inside for dinner and a guaranteed-to-be- yummy dessert. (Local directions: head north at the monument on Route 27 in Bridgehampton until you see it on your right.)
