Message Board > Visiting New York in the summer

I am planning a possible family vacation to Manhattan this August but was wondering if it is maybe too hot to come at that time of year? Is August brutal in New York? Also, how can we find out about renting a house for a week near the city? We were planning on staying in the city for a week and then maybe heading out to the beach, which we've heard is beautiful.
